After searching and searching for a rewarding volunteer opportunity last year, the most interesting thing happened – the Reading Buddies program at Myrtle Beach Elementary found me. I visited MB Elementary last October for my Inaugural School Lunch Tour and while there, the Assistant Principal, Kristie Hamilton, shared information about the program with me. I knew this was the gig for me!
I help a precious 3rd grader, who is considered an at-risk student, with reading skills about an hour once a week. She was shy at first, but now, we are best buds! Yes, we read books and I help her with difficult words and phrases, but the most important thing we do is spend time together and talk.
I was told last week that her reading and writing skills have improved and she will be moving on to the 4th grade. Although I am elated for her, I couldn’t help but get a lump in my throat. I will miss that sweet girl. I never had children and I desperately miss my nephews and great nephews. Being a mentor to this young child was a delight! Before the end of the school year, I will make sure she knows that I needed her just as much as she needed me…and I will thank her for her time and friendship.
I would love for you to join me as a Reading Buddy at MB Elementary. Please get in touch with the founder of the program, Don Hansen. Don is the Minister of Music and Worship at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach and is a kind, generous man. Drop him a line at don@fbcmb.com and let him know you’d love to be a Book Buddy and perhaps, an at-risk student’s Best Bud!
