October is probably my favorite month, for various reasons. Ok, mostly because of Halloween, which is THE BEST holiday in my opinion. With the candy, the dressing up and everything else weird, spooky or unnatural that goes with it.
However, I also like October because it’s the first full month of autumn. Temperatures start to cool, foliage turns into beautiful hues of maroon, orange and red. The leggings, boots, flannel and everything comfy comes out the back of my closet and dressers.
That’s not all October stands for, though. It also signifies Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the Office of Disease Prevention Prevention and Health Promotion, about 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.
On a typical day I interact with that many women! If not more!
Who will be that one?
An acquaintance? One of my best friends? A cousin that I grew up with? My sister-in-law? Either or both of my nieces? My grandma? My mom? Or… me?
What about the men in my life? Because they can develop breast cancer as well.
It’s scary to think about, and I get a pit in my stomach at just the thought.
But someone we know will face it in the future – like many other individuals already have or are currently doing.
When EASY was repping at the Irish Italian Festival on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach the other weekend, I can’t even tell you how many women came up to our booth to purchase a “Tigers For Tatas” bracelet because they were a survivor or they knew someone impacted by breast cancer.
Actually I can – it was too many. No one should have to deal with breast cancer. Period.
So, let’s raise awareness to help those in future!
EASY and TALK 94.5 are selling “Tigers For Tatas” bracelets. Bands are a minimum $5 donation, and proceeds will support Dabo’s All-In-Team Foundation for breast cancer awareness. Their objective is to raise funds for research and prevention.
If you would like to purchase and don a pink wristband, they’ll be available at the station and wherever we are on location!
